SUMMARY:New Year Hike through ȽÁU\,WELṈEW̱ / John Dean Park
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Point: Creswell Road\, North Saanich\nMeeting Point Map:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/YxJhqHgWhzAXscmT8?g_st=ipc\nRoute Map:  https://tinyurl.com/dbyzdauw \nJoin us for a beautiful New Year hike as we explore forested trails through ȽÁU\,WELṈEW̱ / John Dean Park. There is parking on both sides of Cresswell Road. Our route takes us past several impressive old-growth Douglas firs\, a quiet lily pond\, to the peak of Mount Newton and the possibility of a short descent to Pickles Bluff. \nThe trails range from easy to intermediate with some hills and stairs. Please watch your footing and bring poles if you like using them. There are no toilet facilities on the trails themselves\, but we’ll make a short detour to the parking lot outhouse after three kilometres. \nAfter the hike\, we’ll head to The Roost (at East Saanich Road and McTavish) for coffee or a bite. \nAt this time of year\, trail conditions can change quickly. If the weather makes the park unsafe\, we’ll switch to a safer alternative: a walk straight down Cresswell to the Victoria International Airport flight path\, with a coffee stop at the Fickle Fig halfway around. \nWalk Statistics: \nTotal Distance: 9.3  km\nEstimated Finish Time: 2.5 hours (with coffee)\nElevation Change: 394m\nDifficulty: Easy to Intermediate\nSurface: Dirt trails some pavement

DESCRIPTION:Due to the January 1 Holiday\, this month’s Coffee House will be held on the 2nd week of this month. \nCamino Coffee House will be at the Quality Foods café\, located at the Eagle Creek Village Shopping mall\, beside the Victoria General Hospital\, 27 Helmcken Road. The café is located inside Quality Food\, upstairs. If you have a credencial and you would like to have the Victoria stamp (scroll down to see the stamp) in it as your first stamp\, come and join us for coffee and there will be someone there to stamp it!. Sorry no outside food.

SUMMARY:Bear Mountain Walk
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Point: Serious Coffee Millstream Village\nMeeting Point Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/mNaeFkQtaVbvESJTA\nRoute Map: https://onthegomap.com/s/9qmvmbo4  \nThis walk will take the group up and over Bear Mountain in Langford. The total elevation gain is 375 m with a similar descent. Poles will be helpful for this hike as it is meant to be a training hike on sidewalks and gravel surfaces. \nFrom the start point\, we will then hike by Costco\, go to Bear Mountain Parkway\, and begin our ascent. There is a cafe at the top of the mountain however we will pass it (unless it is cold and we need a warm up) and another at the bottom where we can stop https://loghousepub.ca/ for lunch or go for coffee at Serious Coffee where we started our journey. \nIf the weather is not good for walking over Bear Mountain\, we will take a detour and walk around Thetis Lake on this 8.3 km path which is at lower altitudes. \nWalk Statistics: \nTotal Distance: 11 km\nEstimated Finish Time: 3 hours (with coffee)\nElevation Change: 400m\nDifficulty: Medium (due to elevation)\nSurface: Pavement and Groomed Trails

We will meet at the Canadian Tire in North Saanich\, easily accessible from Highway 17 via McDonald Park Road. Our route will take us north of the airport\, down to Patricia Bay\, and then back through fields\, trails\, and woodlands along a mostly flat path. \nWe will stop for coffee at the Fickle Fig after about 10 km. The total distance for the walk is approximately 11 km\, with a short final stretch returning to Canadian Tire. \nWalk Statistics: \nTotal Distance: 11.5 km\nEstimated Finish Time: 3.5 hours (with coffee)\nElevation Change: 135 m\nDifficulty: Easy\nSurface: Pavement and dirt trails

There is some elevation in parts and a little technical under foot in parts but nothing too unmanageable. This is a chance to try your poles as they are recommended for the walk. Work. We cross the road and walk down to the shoreline via McKenzie Bight Trail. Continuing onward to the edge of Mark Lane residential area\, we will return back and take a break down by the water to admire the Saanich Inlet. Walk back up to the base of Mt. Work by using the same trail.
