The trail will lead us to the peaceful Sayward Hill Park forest\, followed by a leisurely stroll through Cordova Bay residential area. The route will come to the hidden gem of Cordova Bay: Doumac Park\, where we can see towering evergreen trees  that resemble an Emily Carr painting. From there\, we’ll stroll over to the Legislature to take in its dazzling lights before heading to the iconic Empress Hotel for a quick walk-through. \nOur holiday spirit will lead us up Government Street and into Chinatown for a glimpse of the festive atmosphere\, before continuing to Centennial Square to enjoy the magical Lights of Wonder festival. Wander through the illuminated displays\, soak up the entertainment\, and maybe treat yourself to a hot chocolate! \nNext\, we’ll make our way from Fort Street to Blanshard\, with an optional detour across the bridge to Lure Restaurant. There is parking on both sides of Cresswell Road. Our route takes us past several impressive old-growth Douglas firs\, a quiet lily pond\, to the peak of Mount Newton and the possibility of a short descent to Pickles Bluff. \nThe trails range from easy to intermediate with some hills and stairs. Please watch your footing and bring poles if you like using them. There are no toilet facilities on the trails themselves\, but we’ll make a short detour to the parking lot outhouse after three kilometres. \nAfter the hike\, we’ll head to The Roost (at East Saanich Road and McTavish) for coffee or a bite. \nAt this time of year\, trail conditions can change quickly. If the weather makes the park unsafe\, we’ll switch to a safer alternative: a walk straight down Cresswell to the Victoria International Airport flight path\, with a coffee stop at the Fickle Fig halfway around. \nWalk Statistics: \nTotal Distance: 9.3  km\nEstimated Finish Time: 2.5 hours (with coffee)\nElevation Change: 394m\nDifficulty: Easy to Intermediate\nSurface: Dirt trails some pavement

The total elevation gain is 375 m with a similar descent. Poles will be helpful for this hike as it is meant to be a training hike on sidewalks and gravel surfaces. \nFrom the start point\, we will then hike by Costco\, go to Bear Mountain Parkway\, and begin our ascent. There is a cafe at the top of the mountain however we will pass it (unless it is cold and we need a warm up) and another at the bottom where we can stop https://loghousepub.ca/ for lunch or go for coffee at Serious Coffee where we started our journey. \nIf the weather is not good for walking over Bear Mountain\, we will take a detour and walk around Thetis Lake on this 8.3 km path which is at lower altitudes. \nWalk Statistics: \nTotal Distance: 11 km\nEstimated Finish Time: 3 hours (with coffee)\nElevation Change: 400m\nDifficulty: Medium (due to elevation)\nSurface: Pavement and Groomed Trails

Our route will take us north of the airport\, down to Patricia Bay\, and then back through fields\, trails\, and woodlands along a mostly flat path. \nWe will stop for coffee at the Fickle Fig after about 10 km.
