Rithet’s Bog and Swan Lake are both nature sanctuaries and can be accessed off the Galloping Goose. The walk is a 16.5 km loop which is mostly flat on well-groomed trails. There is an option to stop at Royal Oak (4 km) depending on the mood of the group and then again at Uptown (13 km).

SUMMARY:John Dean Park Walk
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Point: Cresswell Road and Texada Terrace\nMeeting Point Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/tQcV4xUZboXNMKtBA\nRoute Map: https://onthegomap.com/s/s5iltkpu \nThis is a moderately challenging but beautiful hike along forested trails in John Dean Provincial Park (LAU\,WELNEW). Our viewpoint will be Pickles Bluff almost 6 km into the hike. We’ll return through a pretty residential area. Bring poles if you use them. After our walk we will head to The Roost on the corner of McTavish Road and East Saanich Road for a well-deserved coffee break or more. \nDirections: Take exit 26 off Hwy 17. Exit the roundabouts onto McTavish Road. Continue approximately 1 km past the four-way stop on McTavish Road and East Saanich Road. Turn left just past the fire hall on the left onto Cresswell Road. There is parking on both sides of Cresswell.

SUMMARY:Chemainus – Stocking Creek Falls Walk
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Point: Corner of Chemainus Road and Oak Street\nMeeting Point Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/jpMXCCF7oVNyEtS46\nRoute Map: https://onthegomap.com/s/n3j9osmt \nThis walk is in response to the membership survey who asked for walks a little up island!  Note the start time for this walk above. \nWe’ll meet at the Country Grocer (49th Parallel Grocery) which is in the strip mall at the corner of Chemainus Road and Oak Street in Chemainus.  We will pick up the Cowichan Valley Trail across the road from the mall and walk it to Stocking Creek Park. This is a very well-groomed and wide path that is mostly flat as it is on (or follows) the old railbed. Once we reach Stocking Creek Park\, we will move into the park trail system to take a view of Stocking Creek Falls and shortly thereafter reach our turnaround point. \nAt the end of the hike\, we will return to the same spot where there is also the Sawmill Taphouse restaurant for those who wish to eat and have some refreshments.

The walk starts at the Central Saanich United Church along East Saanich Road to Central Saanich City Hall and back to the church. Total distance is 5.2 km.
